CHAPTER 9

“Wow, you were right about Sarah. Her mind is running at light speed. I could hardly catch a coherent thought.” Rurik sat on the chair across from Katya’s desk, his legs stretched out in front of him.

“I tried to warn you,” Katya said, looking up from her computer. “Why don’t you see if Illarion has any new information? I really need to get through these client billings before the end of the day.”

“Okay, don’t go anywhere alone and call me if you need anything.”

“Of course, brother dear. Now, please go.”

Rurik smiled as he made for the door. “Maybe I should ask Sarah to go to lunch with me. I’m sure Illarion will be here to escort you.”

“Rurik, do what you want. I’m trying to work,” Katya said, exasperation leaking into her tone.

“I’m going, I’m going.” He sauntered out with a wave.

Katya smiled even as she kept typing on her keyboard. She’d missed her younger brother.

She’d finished with two more computer entries when her private phone line rang. Only family had that number. Katya sighed. Maybe it was Karina, though her intuition said it was her father. Time to find out what he thought of her mating Illarion. She answered.

“Hello?”

“Katya, solnyshko moyo, how are you?” her father asked.

“Dad, I’m fine. I’m at work right now. It’s kind of late for you, isn’t it? Being twelve hours ahead of New York, I mean.”

“Can’t a man stay up late to call his daughter?”

“Is everything okay? How’s Mom and my sisters?”

“Your mother is here with me now and your sisters are fine, though Vera will be leaving for college soon. She insists on going to an American school like you and Karina. Maybe you could talk to her. We have good universities here in Russia.”

“It’s probably more that she wants to stretch her wings without being guarded by the pack.”

“She will be guarded, like you and your sister were when you went to college.”

“You had us watched at college. Why?”

“I wasn’t going to send my daughters away and not have someone watching over them.”

“Dad you are unbelievable.” Katya shook her head. For all she knew, her father still had someone watching her. No, if he did, she wouldn’t have been shot.

“Yes, your mother tells me that all the time.” Katya couldn’t help but chuckle.

“I’m sure she does. What do you need, Dad? I’ve got to get back to work.”

“I’m sending the jet to New York. I want you to come home.”

“Dad, I have a job and my mate is here. I’m staying in New York.”

“You can have a job with us. Your Uncle is thinking of retiring, you can take over the pack finances and I’m sure Illarion will do whatever you want. He is determined to make you happy.”

“I like my job here. I’m sorry, Otyets. I’m not leaving. In fact, I’m thinking of applying for American citizenship. Illarion already had his approved.” Katya heard her father growl. “I’ll talk to you later, Dad. I’ve got to go.”

She hung up and winced. Her hand trembled as she moved it away from the phone.
